PMP certification exam is one of the highly regarded certifications. Passing the PMP exam requires thorough knowledge of the project management and deep understanding of PMBOK guide. The four hour long exam could be challenging to pass unless you prepare well for the exam. The following steps describe how to prepare for the PMP exam such that you can pass the exam in the first attempt.

Apply for the PMP exam and complete all the paper work. That way you can avoid the distraction caused by administrative process. Once your application is approved you will have better idea of time-lines to take the PMP exam.

Setup a time plan and target date to take the exam. Unless you have a firm deadline in mind, it is hard to focus and make progress. First determine the activities involved in your study such as reading the books, taking practice exams etc.

Start with PMBOK guide. This is the main book that defines the scope for PMP exam. First read this book in detail from end to end. Everything may not make sense in the beginning. Keep a note of those topics to revisit them later.

Pick up another PMP Exam study book for study. There are numerous books on PMP exam. While they may all have good information, reading too many books makes it hard to organize information and create a solid mind map for quick recollection. So, do not read several books. Just read another good book( other than PMBOK guide) end to end and understand the concepts.

Take PMP practice exams. This is the most important step in the entire preparation process. Take as many practice exams as you can. After the exam, evaluate the performance in each knowledge area. Identify weak areas and read relevant sections PMBOK guide or other book you already read.

Take full length exams and time them. Many practice exams have limited questions. Actual PMP exam has 200 questions in it. Take full exams for practice and time your performance. This will give you an idea of how fast you can answer. After the exam, evaluate the result. Many PMP practice exam software/books provide explanations to the right answers. Read those explanations to solidify your understanding of the answer and reasoning behind it.

Study and remember all formula applicable to knowledge area. These are easy to score. There will be several questions related to formula in PMP exam. Knowing them cold will help you tackle those questions easily and quickly.

Remember all processes in all knowledge areas. Knowing them well will help you understand the question faster and better. It is a good idea to know all the ITTOs for the processes. Try to create a visual mind map of the knowledge areas and processes which will be easier to recall in the exam.

Take good rest before the day of the exam and write exam with calm mind. If you don't understand some questions in the beginning, pass them for later review and move on.This will build your confidence in the exam.
